This site provides you with win/loss/tie probabilities for the game of Texas Holdem. Given the knowledge of your hand and the shown widow card your hand is compared to all possible other hands. All of this information has been precalculated so you get it fast!
Starting from the top, say you have two hole cards and know all five widow cards. There are 990 possible other hands. Comparing your hand to all other hands, the rank of your hand can be determined. If half of these hands beat yours then your odds of winning against one opponent is 50% assuming you know nothing else about the game. If you are playing against two opponents your odds go down to 25%. Calculating this stage of the game is easy, my computer can do it in less than a second. Doing it for every possible hand and widow took a long time.
Working backwards, if you know the widow to the turn there is only one card left to be shown. This river card is one of 46 and for each of these 46 there are still 990 opponent hands. This makes 45,540 hands for comparison. Since all calculations were completed for the previous step a summation of the appropriate numbers from that step improve calculation time.
Repeat for the stage where the three flop cards are known. At this stage there are 1,070,190 possible opponent hands. Repeat again for the stage when all you know is your two hole cards. At this stage there are 2,097,572,400 opponent hands.
Results were verified by comparison to a Monte Carlo simulation. 200,000 random hands were generated for each set of hole cards you could have and statisitcs recorded. The difference between the simulation and PokerPronto was at most 0.36%.
All data was calculated on a PowerBook G4 867 MHz using custom Java software. The data was stored in a MySql 4.1.7 database. After the first round of calculations the limiting time factor was database seek time so a faster processor would not have helped. The server was Jakarta Tomcat 4.1.30 running on a PowerMac G3 with Yellow Dog Linux.
This site is now powered by Ruby on Rails, a Mongrel Pound, and MySql 5.0 on a Mac Mini 1.66 Intel core duo.
